I got my ringtones back!

itoner_cover.jpgAmbrosia Software released iToner 1.0.3 yesterday which allows you to put custom ringtones on your iPhone.

Thank. God.

My biggest gripe with this whole iPhone ringtones thing is that Apple forced you to buy ringtones through their iTunes Store for 99 cents on top of the cost of the song itself. I’m not making apologies for Apple, but they are in the music business now and I’ll bet they were forced into asking users for the 99 cents for the ringtone. It’s considered a “public performance license” which I personally think is a way of the RIAA grabbing money from users. That’s a rant for another time. My point is, what if I already have the CD of the track I want to use? Let’s say I’ll hunker down and tell Apple “OK, you can have my 99 cents to make this into a ringtone, but I have the CD already”. I can live with that, but there’s no mechanism to check if I own the CD already. Even if there was, who’s to say that I can’t burn a CD of a track I downloaded for free? The system is flawed.

So now I can take the tracks I paid for and turn them into ringtones, just like I could on the last three phones I owned. I don’t care about unlocking the phone, I just want to hear my Final Fantasy X Victory Theme when someone calls.
