Adios, CompUSA

As of today, CompUSA is closing 11 out of its 12 NJ stores, including the one close to work and the one close to home.

Struggling CompUSA closing 10 of 11 N.J. stores

There’s nothing I can do about it, but it’s a damn shame. The only PC parts stores left are a few local ones that carry junk, Best Buy, and Circuit City. BB and CC both carry popular items only. If you want that new Blu-Ray burner which CompUSA would always be the first to carry, you won’t get it at BB or CC for quite a while after its initial retail launch. CompUSA was also the first place to carry dual-layered media and burners, and also carried a lot of oddball items like floppy drives and external cases.

BB and CC won’t carry items like that. For people like me where computers are both a profession and a hobby, it’s going to be very hard to find parts locally, especially when I decided to rebuild my PC. I’d usually find the mobo and RAM at the local stores, the hard drive and video card(s) at CompUSA.

I went to the one in East Hanover today and there’s nothing stating that it’s going out of business. Hopefully I’ll catch a deal or two at some point before the doors close.

Someone PLEASE put a Fry’s there!
