Is Stuffit relevant anymore?

For as long as I can remember, I used Stuffit Deluxe for my Mac. When Apple released Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Stuffit Expander was not part of the installation for the first time in many years. Since OS X has .zip creation/expansion built in, I suppose they think that there’s no need for Stufit Deluxe.

The problem I have with Apple’s .zip file handling is that you can’t double-click a .zip file and look at its contents before you expand the archive. So if you want one file out a .zip archive, you have to expand the whole thing, grab the file you want, and then delete the expanded archive. That doesn’t seem very optimal. With Stuffit Deluxe, you can view the archive’s contents in a window, drag the file you want, and simply close the archive window.

An upgrade to Stuffit Deluxe 9 is $14.99. I’ll be upgrading this time around. I feel that Stuffit Deluxe still holds a relevant place in a Mac user’s Applications folder. If you don’t care about creating .sit/.sitx files or viewing archives without expanding them, you could always just download Stuffit Expander.
