G4/TechTV

So it’s been a few days since the G4/TechTV merger. I suppose I overreacted a bit, but here are my thoughts.

First, they kept The Screen Savers, Fresh Gear, and XPlay. I’m happy about that, although I think that killing Call For Help was a serious mistake.

The shows from G4 are interesting.

Pulse isn’t so bad. I have to say that any news show that interviews the creators of Homestar Runner is OK in my book. Overall, I like the show.

Judgment Day is G4′s equivalent of X-Play. I like it, but I still think that Adam knows more about videogames than all these people on G4 combined. What I like about the show is that they give what they like and don’t like about the game at the end of the review. Honestly, I think Adam and Morgan are a better pair.

G4TV is different. Two girl gamers and one guy sit around and BS about gaming for half and hour. It’s different to have a female point of view on gaming. It probably appeals to a completely different demographic than where I fit in, though (like…the lonely guy gamer that never gets out of the house. That’s not me).

The one episode of Icons that I saw was pretty impressive. Granted, I didn’t like their editing style, but the content was damn good. The show I saw was on the history of Atari, and anyone that knows me knows how interested I am in Atari (I just bought a new 2600, modified to work on modern TVs). Update: I watched an episode of Icons that featured videogame music, as if it began in 1990. Sorry, but there’s been decent videogame music before then. They didn’t even mention Nobou Uematsu.

Cheats stinks. We don’t need a whole show on cheat codes and tips.

There was one G4 show whose name I can’t remember which had gamer teams competing against each other. What a sorry crew. It’s one thing to be a gamer, it’s another to see a crew of Bawls-chugging, dumpy-looking losers with no ambition in life except to get high score in every game possible. In interviews, some say they play 8-10 hours a day. Ok, I admit I’ve had marathon sessions of Unreal Tournament, but every day?

We’ll see what shakes out from the show after the big move to LA.
