Comcast fires TechTV staff

The Laporte Report: Comcast Fires TechTV Staff

Six years. That’s how long I’ve been watching ZDTV, now TechTV. Six years of product reviews, interviews with some of the most infuential people in the industry, gaming news, hands-on how-to’s, and some of the best live TV I’ve ever seen. Now Comcast has decided that they’re going to fire the staff of TechTV. Did NBC fire the staff of Friends? Seinfeld? Does ABC arbitrarily scrap NYPD Blue? No.

The Comcast/TechTV “merger” has turned into more of a hostile takeover. Originally, the G4 network (some lame videogame station owned by Comcast) and TechTV were supposed to merge. It seems obvious that an entire station based on videogames could never survive. Now it seems like Comcast bought TechTV to dismantle it. Is that the dumbest idea in programming history? I’ve watched G4. It’s fucking stupid, and I’m addicted to videogames. It’s a bad network. Then Comcast has the nerve to buy TechTV under the guise of merging the two and then firing the entire TechTV staff?

Also, they want TechTV staffers to move to LA. Again, a stupid move. The reason why you were able to get so many interviews with people is because the show was based in Silicon Valley/San Fransisco! You’ll never see an interview with the infuential members of the Homebrew Computer Club ever again. You won’t see Woz or Mitnick co-host the show.

Even if Comcast keeps a show called “The Screen Savers” on their new network, it won’t be the same. If it’s based in LA, it won’t and can’t be the same. The same goes for Call for Help, X-Play, and the others.

It’s sad to see the station going away. I can’t imagine going back to web sites and magazines for news.
